Injuries – who needs them!!

For around the last two years I have been struggling with an on-going shoulder injury which has led to me being out of the water for long periods of time. I have been working with a fantastic physio (I have to say that as he is a friend and training partner!) who has offered many different options to trying to alleviate the issue. I can honestly say that some of the strength in the shoulder has increased, however the pain has not subsided. After many x-rays, MRI’s and ultrasounds I was told that I had degenerative wear in the joint – I was referred to a Musculoskeletal Specialist who was amazing! We tried a cortisone injection which helped with the pain and after a while I managed to get back to training on a full training programme!

However……

The injury strikes back!
In the middle of a recovery set as part of a Heart Rate set, my shoulder seemed to lock, with no movement – ouch! I immediately got out of the water and did not return to training for a period of time. I’ve been referred to an Orthopaedic Specialist who was amazing! He has looked at scans and wants to hopefully perform surgery on the shoulder, shaving some of the bone away which will allow some freedom in the joint. He was under the impression that I would be able to return to training and get on with a training programme, however was not sure at how high a level I would be able to return to due to the surgery.
This, as you can imagine is heart breaking for me as a competitive athlete, but I think I would much prefer to be pain free than training with an injury. I have managed to speak to people who have had similar surgery and have commented on how good they have been since the surgery!

Has anyone else had any injuries that have stopped them doing what they love?!
